Battery Energy Storage Systems
What is a BESS?
A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) primarily consists of a battery system (containing individual battery cells arranged in modules), a storage enclosure similar to ashipping container to house the batteries, a control system to manage charging and discharging, and often an inverter to convert the stored DC power to AC power for use by the national grid; most modern BESS systems utilize lithium-ion batteries as the primary storage technology.
What are BESS used for?
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) can be an emotive subject for those who are negatively impacted by their presence within a community.
BESS projects are proving to be a controversial topic, and have been a topic of much debate in the national media.
And it’s no different in our community, with several projects being proposed in the Leitholm, Eccles and Birgham areas.
The Community Council remains actively engaged with local residents, various BESS project proponents, local authorities and other relevant organisations to;
Oppose any developments which we feel are inappropriate.
Try to minimise the negative impacts from the approved BESS developments in our area
Optimise and allocate any available community benefits.
Please come back to this page frequently for project updates and relevant documentation from BESS project proponents.
